Ratios of Haloperidol and Reduced Haloperidol Serum Levels in Korean Psychiatric Patients

Abstract

|
This study was performed for searching the meaning of ratio between haloperidol and reduced haloperidol serum levels in 47 Korean schizophrenics who had been given haloperidol for over 2 weeks with fixed dose.
Serum samples from haloperidol-treated Korean patients were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detector.
The HPLC assay allows simultaneous quantitation of the reduced metabolite of haloperidol.
The serum haloperidol levels had a fair correlation with daily haloperidol dosage, and also reduced haloperidol serum levels had a good correlation with daily haloperidol dosage.
The correlation between haloperidol serum levels and reduced haloperidol serum levels was also well fair.
The mean serum reduced haloperidol/haloperidol ratio of 47 Korean patients was 1.72¡¾1.34, which is much higher than that of Chinese and Japanese.
The median serum reduced haloperidol / haloperidol ratio of Korean patients was 1.19.
The different serum reduced haloperidol / haloperidol ratios suggest that there exists a lower ratio subgroup and a higher ratio subgroup in haloperidol-treated Korean patients.
